Some might say film looks like Vision3 negative stock scanned at their favorite post house and graded by their favorite colorist or processed by their favorite LUT. This is especially the case now that almost nothing is actually printed to film, and many people’s memory of “film” is actually of some hybrid film/digital processes. It’s worth noting that both film and Filmbox can be made to have many looks, and what people think “film” looks like is a bit of a moving target. We encourage you to try it and see if our model of film lives up to your mental model of film. We certainly tried to gather good data and stay close to that data but our methods are not prefect and there were subjective decisions made about how to tune and implement the data into a functional system that produces creatively satisfying results. (And vice-versa.) I'm not sure that Colloid is still available.Īs to "accuracy," I like what the Filmbox people say:įilmbox does not represent pure empiricism. There's nothing "free" I've seen that's good. But there are also affordable alternatives that are nearly as good for less money. If I had to buy just one, I'd go with Dehancer. Here's a list of Film Emulation PowerGrades and plug-ins: If there aren't any good free LUTs around I can keep using these. However, film is tremendously non-linear, so a LUT based on a film scan would likely do a much better job than this powergrade. I purchased the 2393 Powergrade from Juan Melara, which includes a few nodes to emulate 250D and the combination is far improved over just using the 2393 (power grade or LUT) by itself without a negative emulation. I recently watched the excellent video by Cullen Kelly on film emulation where he pointed out that print film was optimised to be paired with a negative film acquisition I am not set on any particular negative, although I would imagine that 250D and 500T are the most likely candidates, and either of these would be lovely No, I am not trying to get an "accurate" emulation, just trying to use them as a creative tool I haven't searched google because I don't know how to evaluate if the LUT is reliable/reasonable quality.Īs I'm asking about film emulation, I should add a few caveats: I searched the forums and couldn't find any mentions, so apologies if I missed them. Are there any free and high quality negative film emulation LUTs around? Resolve has a selection of PFEs but no negative emulations and I wanted to emulate both processes.
